Benzoin is obtained from the Styrax tonkinensis trees of Borneo, Sumatra, Java and Thailand. These trees bleed sweet healing tears of this balsamic, dark reddish-brown resin when incisions are
made into their trunk.
This thick resinoid has a relaxing vanilla-like scent and has gained popularity as an ingredient in Friar's Balsam. Being a resin Benzoin may become solid, simply stand the
bottle in hot water to liquefy. This is a classic Base Note, being slow to vapourise. |
