Basil grows to 30 to 60 cm in height. This bushy plant (originally from India) flowers in July and August. Flowers vary from white to red.
The whole of the herb is used in herbal
medicine. It contains up to 1% of a volatile oil, the major constituents of which are linalool and estragole. Other ingredients include polyphenolic acids such as caffeic acid and vitamin A and vitamin C. |
