The spine has three natural curvatures located in the neck region, the middle back and the lower back. Correct posture maintains all three of these curves and in doing so, distributes body
weight evenly so there is no undue stress on the spine. Incorrect posture occurs when the natural curves of the spine are not maintained while standing, sitting or exercising. If this occurs, the risk of
back injury is increased because body weight is not evenly distributed. Most back injuries are a result of incorrect posture or imbalances in the strength of the soft tissues (muscles, ligaments and
tendons) that surround and support the spine. It is therefore very important to maintain good strength in the soft tissues that support the spine and also to maintain correct posture. |
